Major US companies push a pollution cap

10 major US companies group to demand a mandatory cap on greenhouse gas emissions. The partnership, called U.S. Climate Action Partnership or USCAP, includes some of the biggest US companies, like Alcoa, Wal-Mart, BP, DuPont and General Electric.

Their goal is to push legislation that would change the current Bush policy - which refuses the mandatory cap, chosing instead to relly on voluntary efforts to restrain greenhouse gas emissions. The companies defend a radical shift in policy, which would be based on a "cap-and-trade program" that would allow companies to buy and sell emission credits and so limit their habbility to pollute at will.

But some environmental groups are sceptical, saying that the announced green strategies are a drop in the ocean of the giant company budget. They say Tesco should improve on-store efficiency, its dependency on cars, and other supply chain problems.
